Q Experiment 12 - Generating Hydrogen Gas • Points 15 • Submitting a file upload Today we start Experiment 12. You can find a .pdf copy of the Experiment in the Laboratory Manual Module. This lab is considered a "wet lab", as we use chemicals and laboratory equipment to collect the data. The lab is designed to let you generate and capture a sample of Hydrogen gas. We measure the Volume, Temperature, and Pressure of the gas for use in the Ideal Gas Law. The video below was recorded by the Laboratory Staff at Sierra College (where I also teach) to demonstrate how we collect the data for Part A. Please watch the video so you have an idea about how the experiment was to be performed. You do not need to record any observations or data from the video. In Part A, we perform a reaction between magnesium metal and hydrochloric acid. We use our data to calculate the Actual Yield of Hydrogen gas that forms. After determining the Theoretical Yield via stoichiometry, we use the values to calculate the % Yield of Hydrogen gas product. In Part B, we perform a reaction between an unknown metal and hydrochloric acid. We use our data to calculate the number of moles of metal used in producing the Hydrogen gas. We can calculate the Molar Mass of the metal, and identify it by comparing our calculated Molar Mass to the values on the Periodic Table. To help you work through the calculations today, I've included a small audio discussion. This small discussion will: • provide a brief description of the procedure for the chemical reaction and data collection • provide a walk-through of how we use our data to complete the calculations and determine the percentage value in Part A and the identity of our metal in Part B You can use the same techniques to answer the questions in the postlab. Along with a copy of the discussion and white board notes, you can find the virtual data for this experiment below. Use this data to complete the calculations. All of the "wet lab" experiments this semester have 2 components: The Data Table pages, and the Postlab Questions. You need to complete both parts of the Experiment, and turn them both in as your lab report.
